Introduction to Surfboat Rowing
The United Kingdom Surf Rowers League will be hosting an introduction to surf boat rowing. This is for complete rowing novices as well as those who row already but not in surf boats.
Participants must be 16 or over and able to swim 200m unaided, without stopping. Crews can be all male, female, or mixed, at your preference.
All boats and equipment will be provided and each crew will be provided with an experienced “sweep” to take them through the necessary skills and techniques. The plan is to spend the morning on basic instruction and safety drills with a proper race event in the afternoon. Details below.
Where? Carbis Bay, Near St Ives. See attached map link.

This venue has been chosen deliberately as it is safe and protected from the bigger swells that cause large surf on more open beaches.
When? Sunday 13 May. This is the week-end after the gigs world championships and it is hoped some gig rowers may want to try something new.
10:00 - Boats at beach/Introduction
10:30 - Safety and basic technique
12:30 - Lunch
13:00 - Race
15:00 - Finish
What to wear? Surf boats have fixed seats and rowers slide up and down them. You do not want to wear something that will rub eg boardshorts.
Speedos, swimming trunks and bikinis are ideal with a rash vest, lycra, or other tight fitting top.
Wet suit boots are acceptable but many rowers race barefoot.
Bring a towel, obviously.
Bring warm clothing as, subject to numbers, each sweep may have more than one crew to take out.
How many in a crew? Ideally four but don’t worry if you are short as experienced rowers will be on hand to make up numbers. Please advise of numbers beforehand.

How much will it cost? It’s free. Come and have some fun.
